Warsheikh, Middle Shabelle (Hornpost) – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today officially laid the foundation stone for the construction of the New Mogadishu International Airport, a major infrastructure project set to be developed in the Warsheikh district of the Middle Shabelle region.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Hassan Sheikh highlighted the significance of the project, describing it as a key driver for national progress and regional connectivity. “This modern airport will not only serve the Somali public but will also accommodate international flights, contributing to the economic growth and global integration of Somalia,” he stated.

The President emphasized that the airport’s construction—led by a Somali-owned company—demonstrates both the recovery of the nation and the resilience of the Somali people. “On one hand, we are liberating our communities from terrorism; on the other, we are building infrastructure that reflects the dignity and aspirations of our people,” he said.

President Hassan Sheikh was joined at the ceremony by:

H.E. Ali Abdullahi Hussein, President of Hirshabelle State

H.E. Hassan Mohamed Hussein, Governor of Banadir and Mayor of Mogadishu

H.E. Mahmoud Adan Gessod, Federal Minister of Commerce and Industry

H.E. Abdikarim Abdo Haydar, State Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation

Mr. Ahmed Macalin Hassan, Director-General of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority

The New Mogadishu International Airport is expected to play a transformative role in Somalia’s aviation sector and broader economic landscape, as part of the federal government’s commitment to infrastructure development and national unity.
