Official Statement: Rising Tensions Over Increased Telecommunication Service Prices

The KAAH Party once again affirms its full support for the will of the people of the Republic of Somaliland regarding their opposition to the recent price hikes implemented by telecommunications companies for internet and voice services.

The KAAH Party strongly criticizes the government’s response to the ongoing tension between the public and the telecommunications companies. The provision in the agreement between the government and the companies — which calls for the formation of a technical committee to investigate the reasons behind the price increases — appears to lack genuine concern and empathy for the low-income population.

Furthermore, the KAAH Party strongly opposes violations against the free press, referring to the statement released today by the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA). The press is the fourth pillar of governance and deserves protection from harassment or obstruction in carrying out their duties of reporting and representing public opinion.

Lastly, the KAAH Party acknowledges the important role that various businesses and telecom companies play in shaping the nation’s identity, development, investment, and job creation. Therefore, we urge the public to exercise restraint and avoid causing harm or disruption to business owners and telecom operators. Our entrepreneurs and companies deserve respect and encouragement — the current conflict is one that can be resolved with mutual understanding. As the Somali proverb says: “Do not let your words be filled with thorns.”

Similarly, large businesses and corporations have a moral duty to show compassion for their citizens — most of whom are vulnerable and struggling to meet basic needs.

All praise is due to Allah.

Hon. Mahmoud Hashi Abdi
