Somaliland Warns of Destabilization Following Somalia’s Political Meddling
PRESS RELEASE
Hargeisa – Hornpost.net / .com – The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Somaliland held its regular session today, chaired by the President of the Republic, H.E. Abdirahman Mohomed Abdilahi Irro to address the escalating political interference by the Federal Government of Somalia in the eastern parts of Sool region—territory that historically and legally belongs to the Republic of Somaliland.
Minister of Information, Culture, and Awareness of the Republic of Somaliland Hon. Ahmed Yasin Sheikh Ali Ayanle, delivered the statement to the press, emphasizing that:
“We will never accept that the failed administration in Mogadishu divides the people of Somaliland or establishes an illegal administration within our territory.”
The Council firmly denounced Somalia’s actions as illegal and destabilizing, warning that they pose a threat to peace and social cohesion in the region.
Key Points from the Cabinet Statement:
- Somaliland’s Sovereignty
Somaliland is built on the will of its people, international legal principles, and the boundaries established during its independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. After a failed union with Somalia, Somaliland reclaimed its independence based on historical legitimacy and democratic consensus.
- Illegality of Mogadishu’s Interference
The Federal Government of Somalia, having failed in its core responsibilities of governance and reconciliation, is now exploiting the situation in Sool to divert attention from internal failures and to manipulate domestic and international perceptions. The Somali government is reportedly using international aid and arms to foment unrest in Somaliland territories.
- Territorial Unity of Somaliland
The regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Togdheer are indivisible components of the sovereign territory of Somaliland. The people of these regions were at the forefront of Somaliland’s independence movement and continue to play a vital role in its democratic journey. Attempts by Mogadishu to divide these regions along clan or political lines are a deliberate provocation intended to ignite tribal conflict.
- Commitment to Peace
The Republic of Somaliland remains committed to peace and stability both internally and in the region. Efforts are underway to resolve tensions in Lasanod and wider eastern Sool through dialogue and peaceful means. Positive progress has also been made in Sanaag, where local leaders have embraced reconciliation initiatives led by President Cirro, with the active involvement of respected traditional elders.
- Call to International Stakeholders
The government of Somaliland alerts the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, IGAD, and the international community that the lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia has enabled the government in Mogadishu to acquire weapons now used in politically motivated conflicts. These arms risk falling into the hands of extremist groups, exacerbating instability across the Horn of Africa
Conclusion
While Somaliland remains a reliable partner in promoting regional peace, democracy, and development, the government reiterates its constitutional duty to defend its people, territory, and sovereignty. The Republic of Somaliland will not tolerate illegal encroachment or the establishment of unauthorized administrations by the failed authorities in Mogadishu.
