Mogadishu, (Hornpost)– President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, joined national leaders in launching celebrations for the 65th anniversary of Somalia’s independence, in Somaliland Regions marking the beginning of Independence Week.
In a speech delivered during the opening ceremony, President Hassan extended heartfelt congratulations to the Somali people, honoring the legacy of the freedom fighters who led the struggle for independence, particularly those from the northern regions.
“Those heroes gave us more than just freedom from colonial rule — they gifted us unity, purpose, and the foundation of a Somali state. History will always remember their sacrifices,” the President said.
He emphasized that independence is not only the removal of colonial powers but also the realization of national unity and self-governance. Reflecting on Somalia’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, President Hassan acknowledged that the country has faced serious political wounds, caused by dictatorship, misuse of power, and governance failures.
“Our independence will never be complete until we reunite our hearts and rebuild our shared cause,” he stated. “The only path forward is through dialogue and brotherhood.”
President Hassan also expressed appreciation for the international community’s support in safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity. He called for continued efforts toward achieving peace, prosperity, and lasting reconciliation.
