Mogadishu (Hornpost) On May 30th, the Chief of the Italian Defense Staff, General Luciano Portolano, arrived out an official visit to the Headquarters of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S).

Upon his arrival in Mogadishu, at the International Campus, General Portolano was received by the Commander of the EUTM-S mission, Brigadier General Giuseppe Zizzari. He was given a comprehensive briefing on the mission’s activities and subsequently met with the personnel of the Italian contingent deployed in Somalia.

The visit was marked by a series of high-level engagements and institutional meetings. A key moment was his encounter with the Somali Minister of Defense, the Honorable Ahmed FIQI.

Equally significant was his meeting with the Commander of the Somali Armed Forces, General Odawaa Yusuf Rageh.

During his visit, General Portolano also met with the Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), General Sam Kavuma, as well as with the Italian Ambassador to Somalia, His Excellency Pier Mario Daccò Coppi. These encounters further reinforced Italy’s institutional and diplomatic presence in the region.

Since 2010, EUTM-S has been working closely with the Somali National Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense, supporting the development of Somali Defense Institutions through its Three Pillar Approach: training, mentoring and advice.
